When we can’t make it to class, what do we do to get better at Martial Arts and Self Defense?
I’ve been training in Martial Arts for over 45 years at this point, most of the time here in Los Gatos California.
But I’ve also traveled teaching and training all over the globe.
Sometimes I couldn’t make it to a class or travel made it difficult to engage with a training partner.
I read one that the astronauts during preparation to travel to our moon for the first time prepared for the journey with the most rudimentary of props. They didn’t have anything like the simulators we have now.
Solo practice is about the dedication to yourself and your regular (daily) practice. The benefits are not always immediately apparent, but through dedication and discipline it will be undeniable to those who merely give a couple hours a week in a guided class.
Self Defense and the need for it doesn’t wait till you’re good enough. The need for such skills has no consideration to the rank you might hold, or which teacher you got your rank from. The time you need it will be unplanned, unrehearsed, and possibly while you were unaware of the imminent need.
Solo practice is the one endeavor that will separate you from the hobbyist, it will be of unmistakable value as you see yourself training a year from now, 5 years from now, next month.
But as the saying goes, “perfect practice makes perfect, so must your solo practice be held to a high standard, targeted and specific. Whether your need is for perfected martial art or perfectly prepared self defense, you’ll need a teacher.
